Honorable Mention Ice Skater Lauriette (Laurie Byro) In January, I skated the pond and thought about drowning— breaking the ice to lies swimming beneath. A slender sapling slapped my face with a green fan, snow rouging my cheeks, and startled me. I was angry, ashamed, and rooted. In awe of a tree on the edge of my pond. There was no betrayal.
