Honorable Mention
Ice Skater
Lauriette (Laurie Byro)

In January, I skated the pond
and thought about drowning—
breaking the ice
to lies swimming beneath.

A slender sapling
slapped my face with a green fan,
snow rouging my cheeks,

and startled me.
I was angry, ashamed,
and rooted.
In awe of a tree
on the edge of my pond.

There was no betrayal.
She hadn’t told my secrets,
nor had the moon. That whore,
more than once indiscreet.

For who could have whispered
the place we were to meet?

When it started to snow
ice drifting to flowers,
guards blocking the path
by the shivering firs.

I hurried so as not to turn to ice.

For each snowflake knows
right where to fall

just in time
for our melting

lips on lips
